《Thirty Years after the Lifting of Martial Law – and the Year 1 of the Reform》

The year 2017, marked the 70th anniversary of the 228 Incident, and in the 30 years following the lifting of Martial Law, Taiwan has moved forwards and evolved into today’s state with „winds and rains“ of events in between. The year 2017 also marked the first anniversary of the complete pan-green dominant governance in Taiwan, both the president and the legislative majority.

Therefore, 2017 is the appropriate year for us to „look back“ and „look forward“, it is the end of our recent history and the beginning of a new era.

Looking back, we commemorate those predecessors who lost their lives in the fight for freedom and recollect numerous conflicts and reconciliations in the past 30 years of the “post martial law period”. Looking at the clashes between various groups of people, the rise of student activism and social movements, we wonder how vibrantly the people have transformed our society by active involvement in civil affairs.

Looking at where we stand today, how do we evaluate the pace and direction of the current reform? Looking forwards, what path should Taiwan take now in order to achieve our dream of an ideal society?

For this year’s conference of the European Federation of Taiwanese Associations, the organizing committee has invited representatives from across different fields of interests from Taiwan, thereby the participants can discuss and exchange thoughts and opinions with our guests. We earnestly invite anyone who cares about the future of Taiwan to attend our conference, together we will address our concerns for the upcoming era’s new challenge for Taiwan.

Below is our tentative program of this year. We kindly invite you to visit our Facebook page where we will update our conference program as soon as they become available.
